What Il viaggio della sposa Is About
In the seventeenth century Porzia, a noblewoman raised in a convent, is sent off to be married. The party is ambushed on the road and the woman is left with only Bartolo, the coachman, beside her; the two of them have to travel together through dangerous country neither of them knows. One is educated and sheltered, the other poor and used to the road, and as the journey lengthens that difference produces both comic situations and an unexpected closeness. Sergio Rubini’s ninety two minute Italian film joins a road story to a period piece and is about two people thrown upon each other. The director himself plays Bartolo and Giovanna Mezzogiorno plays Porzia; it was completed in 1997.
