Inseparables

A wealthy businessman is left paralysed from the neck down after an accident and looks for someone to care for him. The job goes to a man with no experience at all, who only has to appear to be job-hunting because of a court order. What they share is a refusal to pity each other. Marcos Carnevale directed. Oscar Martinez plays the businessman, Rodrigo de la Serna the carer. This is a remake; the source is the 2011 French film The Intouchables. The same story has been refilmed in many countries and the Argentine version is one of them. What belongs to this adaptation is the way it builds the class question through Buenos Aires; the distance between the two men rests on different social ground than in the French original. Martinez carries the film. His character is not only dependent but also difficult and manipulative, and the actor delivers that without sliding into emotional blackmail. Who it is for: people who liked the original and want to see the familiar story in another culture. Who it is not for: anyone after an original idea; the film chooses fidelity deliberately.
