What Invisible Stripes Is About
Cliff Taylor comes out of prison determined to go straight. But the outside will not let him: his fiancée leaves, the job he finds throws him out as untrustworthy, everyone looks at him as a man with a record. At home there is his mother and his younger brother Tim, who wants to build a decent life for himself. In the end Cliff goes back to his old friend Chuck. Lloyd Bacon's Warner picture is adapted from a book by Lewis E. Lawes. The invisible stripes of the title are the convict's uniform that never comes off a man once he has been inside. George Raft, Humphrey Bogart and a young William Holden appear together. The telling does not put crime in the right, but it shows how society shuts the door.
