What Jan Werich's Fimfarum Is About
In the sixties Jan Werich recorded the tales he told onto an LP, and they were later collected in a book called Fimfárum. This film brings five of those stories to the screen in puppet animation: Fimfárum, When the Leaves Fall from the Oak, Fearless Frankie, A Dream Fulfilled and Greedy Barka. Devils, miracles, ordinary human weaknesses and peasant cunning sit side by side; for all that they are fairy tales, what they describe is everyday morality. Vlasta Pospíšilová and Aurel Klimt give each story its own visual manner and match the design to the humour in Werich’s telling. Continuing the long Czech tradition of puppet animation, it also became the first in a series carrying the same name. Werich’s own recorded voice is used for the narration.
