When the Japanese army entered Nanjing in 1937 a massacre followed that lasted six weeks. John Rabe, a German businessman in the city as Siemens' representative, set up a safety zone with other foreigners and gathered tens of thousands of Chinese inside it. The reason he could do it is uncomfortable: he was a member of the Nazi Party and, as the representative of Japan's ally, his word carried. The film does not hide that contradiction. Ulrich Tukur plays Rabe, with Steve Buscemi and Daniel Brühl as other foreigners in the zone.
