Soumitra Chatterjee What Shadows of Time Is About
Ravi and Masha are still children when they are sold into labour by their parents. They meet at the factory and a friendship grows between them; when the manager threatens to sell Masha on, Ravi gives up the money he has saved with such difficulty to buy her freedom. They agree how they will find each other once Ravi has earned enough to buy his own, but misunderstandings and fear pull them apart. Years later they are free at last; this time it is in love that they must find their way. The film does not use child labour as background decoration but places it as the story’s point of departure. Tannishtha Chatterjee appears in Florian Gallenberger’s hundred and twenty two minute Bengali language film, completed in 2005.
