Kadaikutty Singam

Pandiraj's 2018 Tamil film follows the youngest son of a large rural family. Gunasingam has not given up farming; while his sisters' husbands want to sell the land and move to the city, he insists on staying. That division within the family is the film's conflict. The film addresses the state of agriculture in Tamil Nadu directly: the indebtedness of smallholders, drought and the younger generation leaving the village. Those matters are placed inside a commercial family film, which is its most notable quality. Karthi leads, with Sathyaraj as the father. The narrative is long and crowded; there are many family members and making room for all of them slows the pace. The songs and wedding sequences supply the commercial side. Who it's for: those who like Tamil family drama and films about rural life. Who it's not for: viewers looking for something short and focused; the film is long and carries many subplots.
