Destiny

A film by Zeki Demirkubuz sharing its world with Masumiyet. It takes place before the story told in that earlier film. There we heard who Bekir was and how he came to be that way; here we watch it happen. Bekir is a young man working in his father's shop. He sees Uğur, and from that moment his life is tied to one thing. But Uğur loves someone else: Zagor, who is in prison. The man is transferred from city to city and Uğur follows him. Bekir follows Uğur. What the film describes is not love but how a person is destroyed by his own choice. Nothing Bekir does is returned, and he continues anyway; the narrative is hard not because it glorifies this but because it carries it all the way. Ufuk Bayraktar plays Bekir and Vildan Atasever plays Uğur. Engin Akyürek is also in the cast. Zeki Demirkubuz directed. It was shown at festivals in Turkey and abroad and became one of the director's most-discussed works. A strong example for anyone who likes Turkish cinema and dark character studies. Before you watch, know this: the film leaves none of its characters a way out and its register is heavy from beginning to end.
