What La Bandera Is About

Pierre Gilieth kills a man in Paris, flees to Barcelona, runs out of money and enlists in the Spanish Foreign Legion. There he meets two fellow Frenchmen, Mulot and Lucas, and while trying to forget what he did he discovers that Lucas's friendship is not disinterested. Julien Duvivier's 1935 film is one of the pictures that built Jean Gabin's career, fixing his persona as the fatalistic working class hero. It was adapted from Pierre Mac Orlan's novel. Early prints carried a dedication to Francisco Franco, then commanding the Legion, and the French left attacked the film's military adventurism.
