La Rabbia

The film is built from newsreel footage of the 1950s and early 60s and asks a single question: why are we so uneasy. It is in two separate parts, and two different people made them. Pasolini's part puts the colonial past of the West and the independence movements in Africa at the centre. Guareschi's part defends Western civilisation. The producer Gastone Ferranti first came to an arrangement with Pier Paolo Pasolini, then asked him to suggest a writer from the opposite camp; Giovannino Guareschi made the second part. The film opened in 1963 and was pulled from cinemas a few weeks later. Pasolini's part circulated separately afterwards, while Guareschi's all but disappeared. Both texts carry the politics of their moment openly.
