What Notes Towards an African Orestes Is About

Pasolini wanted to make a version of Aeschylus’s Oresteia set in Africa around 1960, when one colony after another was following Ghana into independence, and this is the notebook left over from the attempt. He scouts locations in Tanzania and Uganda in late 1968 and early 1969, looks at people he meets in the street and says aloud that one could be Orestes and another Electra, and cuts in newsreel from the war in Biafra. Then he screens his own notes for a group of African students in Rome, who tell him politely and unmistakably that the primeval Africa he has imagined has little to do with the place they come from. The feature was never made, and by the end the person least convinced by the idea seems to be Pasolini himself.
