Pier Paolo Pasolini D Don Andrea Carraro What Scouting in Palestine Is About
In 1963 Pasolini travelled to Palestine with a newsreel cameraman and a Catholic priest to see whether he could shoot The Gospel According to Matthew in something like its historical geography. What survives was assembled by the producer for possible funders and distributors, and its only soundtrack is Pasolini’s half improvised commentary. Village by village his disappointment grows: Israel strikes him as far too modern, the Palestinians as far too wretched. He shot the film in southern Italy in the end, and forty years later Mel Gibson used some of the same locations.
