In August 2015, while North Korea was marking the seventieth anniversary of its liberation from Japanese rule, the Slovenian group Laibach became the first foreign rock band to play a concert in the country. The documentary is less about how the show became possible than about how hard it was: songs go through days of censorship review, lyrics are altered, staging is argued over and the rehearsals stay in doubt until the last moment. Uģis Olte and Morten Traavik co-directed, and Traavik is also inside the frame as the man who had been pushing the project for years. That is where the strangeness sits, since a band that made totalitarian aesthetics its own material is standing on the stage of a state that actually works that way. The film follows the negotiation without deciding either side is right.
