What Love on the Ground Is About
A playwright offers two actresses he knows parts in a new play he has not finished. The problem is this: the play has only one female role. When both of them want it, the rehearsal period turns into a contest and then into a game the writer is running. The film deliberately blurs the line between the real and the staged; in time it becomes impossible to tell who is acting and who is living. The account runs close to three hours and builds its pace like a puzzle. Jane Birkin and Geraldine Chaplin appear in Jacques Rivette’s hundred and seventy six minute French film, completed in 1984.
