Love

Imperial Russia. Anna Karenina falls for the officer Count Vronsky and leaves both her husband and her son to build something with him. The world around her does not forgive it, and the price she pays is never the price he pays. Edmund Goulding's silent version cuts a great deal of Tolstoy away and puts the charge between Greta Garbo and John Gilbert at the centre instead. Two endings were shot: one print closed on the novel's tragedy, another on a happy fade out. Calling it Love rather than Anna Karenina was a marketing decision as much as anything, since the two stars were involved off screen at the time and the studio put that on the poster.
