Made in Abyss: Wandering Twilight

Riko and Reg go on descending. They are inside a vast pit called the Abyss, and each layer is more dangerous than the last; trying to climb leaves heavy effects on the body, and the deeper you are the more deadly those effects become. They descend to the third and fourth layers. There they meet someone: Nanachi. The place they live looks safe, and there is another being with them; who that being is and how they came to be that way is at the centre of the narrative. Masayuki Kojima directs. The film joins episodes of the television series for cinema and is the second such compilation. The source is Akihito Tsukushi's comic. The world it builds is detailed; the layers of the Abyss, its rules and the effect of ascent are given as a system. What it is most talked about for is register; the visual manner and character design resemble a children's story while the content is extremely hard. The Nanachi section is the heaviest part of the series and is built on experiment, pain and choice. Kevin Penkin's music carries the emotional side. Its limit is the compilation structure; for anyone who has not seen the series some transitions are abrupt. Who it is for: viewers who like dark fantasy narratives and are following the series. Who it is not for: the content is very hard, some scenes uncomfortable, and the visual manner does not match the content.
