Marriage

Podkolyosin is a middle-aged official. He decides to marry. The decision is not really his own. His friend Kochkaryov talks him into it. A matchmaker is set to work. A candidate is found, a merchant’s daughter named Agafya Tikhonovna. He is not the only suitor. Others line up as well, each with his own calculation. The whole business of courtship drags on. Podkolyosin cannot get past his own indecision. It gets as far as the wedding, and at the last moment the groom disappears. The story comes from a play by Gogol. Aleksey Petrenko, Svetlana Kryuchkova, Oleg Borisov and Evgeni Leonov appear in the ninety four minute film, a Soviet production Vitaliy Melnikov made at the Lenfilm studio.
