What The Chief of Chukotka Is About
Just after the civil war, on the road to Chukotka the commissar dies, and the young clerk travelling with him, Alyosha Bychkov, finds himself the region’s chief. The ideas he has brought are clear enough: justice, equality, the new order. But there is also the fur trade, and dealing with American, Japanese and other merchants the young man learns the rules of commerce fast; the comedy comes precisely from revolutionary enthusiasm and profit colliding inside the same person. Vitaly Melnikov made the black and white film at Lenfilm; it was shown on 17 April 1967 and drew more than fifteen million viewers within a year. Mikhail Kononov plays Alyosha. The English summary in the record is written in broken sentences.
