What Midnight Sun Is About

Kaoru lives with an illness that keeps her out of sunlight. She is indoors by day and outside at night, playing guitar and singing in front of the railway station. For years she has watched Koji from her window on his way to school every morning. One night they meet. As the relationship grows Kaoru wants to live in the daytime, and she knows what that would mean for her. Norihiro Koizumi's film is an example of the illness melodrama that has been very popular in Japan. The lead is the singer YUI; she wrote and performed the songs in the film herself, and that became the thing it was most talked about for. The telling does not use the illness as a mystery, it names it from the start. A television series and an American remake followed later.
