What Chihayafuru: Part III Is About
The story picks up two years after the second film, with Chihaya now in her final year of high school and preparing for another national karuta tournament with her friends. Being in the last year means a date that ends both the game and the friendships around it, and the film lets that ending arrive at its own pace, alongside the concentration of the card mat itself. Norihiro Koizumi wrote and directed this closing part of the trilogy, which opened in Japan on 17 March 2018. Suzu Hirose, Shuhei Nomura and Mackenyu lead, with new cast members including Kaya Kiyohara and Kento Kaku, and it took more than one and a half billion yen at the box office.
