What Chihayafuru: Part II Is About
Chihaya and her friends have come through the Tokyo qualifier and are preparing for the nationals, but the preparation goes badly. Arata, the childhood friend who put her onto the game in the first place, announces that he has stopped playing competitively, and a new opponent appears in Shinobu Wakamiya, who became the country's best female player while still in middle school. Norihiro Koizumi's film is the second of three adapted from Yuki Suetsugu's manga, and the titles of the first two come straight from the game: the upper and the lower halves of the classical poems read aloud in karuta. What interests the film is less the result of the tournament than the point at which loving a game turns into being obliged to it.
