What Mismatched Couples Is About
A young breakdancer gets tangled up with a poor opera performer, that performer’s older sister, a jealous cousin, a female student and two rivals. The interesting part is what the film is not: made by Yuen Woo-ping, one of the first names anyone thinks of in martial arts cinema, and starring Donnie Yen, it is not a martial arts film at all but a youth comedy buried in the breakdancing and the fashions of the mid-eighties. Yen plays someone entirely open to silliness here, unlike anything he would become known for later. It was the second film he made with Yuen, who had been his teacher, and the choreography goes into the dancing rather than into fights.
