What Odd Obsession Is About
A middle-aged man feels inadequate beside a wife much younger than he is. The solution he arrives at is both strange and dangerous: push his daughter's fiancé toward his wife, then watch what happens. Everyone in the house keeps a diary, everyone secretly reads everyone else's, and a game gets going that nobody will admit to playing. Kon Ichikawa adapted Junichiro Tanizaki's 1956 novel The Key. He treats the material not as an erotic story but as a cold, sardonic satire of a family; nobody in it is sympathetic. Machiko Kyo stars alongside a young Tatsuya Nakadai. It won the Jury Prize at Cannes and was argued about a good deal when it opened in Japan.
