What On Trial Is About

Etzel is a young prosecutor. His father is a man of law as well. Years ago he tried a case. The accused was called Leonardo Maurizius. The man was convicted in that trial. But the verdict rested on presumption rather than solid proof. Etzel learns of it. After he learns it he cannot rest. He makes the matter a point of honour. He goes back to the beginning of the file. He sets about tracing the sources afresh. What he wants is to bring out the truth. But the man standing in his way is his own father. Daniel Gélin and Madeleine Robinson take the leads, with Anton Walbrook and Charles Vanel also in the cast, in Julien Duvivier’s French, Italian and American coproduction of 1954.
