What Our Vines Have Tender Grapes Is About
A small town in Wisconsin settled by Norwegian farmers; the story moves through the eyes of little Selma and her cousin Arnold, and as the seasons pass the children’s world widens. A calf, a circus elephant, a creek in flood, a fire in the barn; none of it is large, but for the children each of it happens for the first time. Edward G. Robinson plays the father and Margaret O’Brien plays Selma, with Agnes Moorehead, James Craig and Morris Carnovsky around them. Roy Rowland directed and Dalton Trumbo wrote the screenplay from George Victor Martin’s 1940 novel; Trumbo would be blacklisted two years later. It opened on 6 September 1945. The record names the town Fuller Junction while other sources call it Benson Junction.
