What Scene of the Crime Is About
A detective investigates the shooting of a fellow officer and discovers as he goes that the dead man may have been mixed up in crooked business. The case splits in two: find the killer, and find out who his friend actually was. Roy Rowland's 1949 picture is one of MGM's attempts at noir, sitting somewhere between a polished studio look and the darkness the genre wanted. Van Johnson plays the detective, with Arlene Dahl and Gloria DeHaven. A police force investigating itself was unusual material then, and the film treats it as an illness inside the job rather than a scandal.
