What Promises Is About
The documentary was shot between 1997 and 2000. The crew talks with seven children living in and around Jerusalem, some Israeli, some Palestinian, all of them between nine and thirteen. They live a few kilometres from each other and have never met. Each gives their own account, their own history, their own loss. Then, midway through, a day is arranged: two of the Israeli children visit the Palestinian children at a refugee camp, and that day means something different to every one of them. Carlos Bolado, B.Z. Goldberg and Justine Shapiro direct together; a hundred and six minutes, with Goldberg the one talking to the children. It was nominated for the documentary feature Oscar in 2002. Arabic, Hebrew and English are all spoken in it.
