In a housing block, a boy cramming for university entrance watches the woman across the way: once active in the peace movement, now living an ordinary housewife’s life and meeting a former lover in secret. Koji Wakamatsu made the film inside the cheap erotic format known as pink cinema, but what is kept behind the wall has less to do with sex than with the recent past Japan had decided to stop discussing. When it was sent to Berlin in 1965 the country erupted; the producers’ federation called it a national disgrace and boycotted the festival. The film had not even finished passing the censorship board at the time.
