What Violent Virgin Is About
A group of young people kidnap a couple, hold them in a barren landscape and run various experiments on them to a soundtrack of free jazz. In the distance a yakuza gang is watching the youths, and as the film goes on it stops being clear who is experimenting on whom. Koji Wakamatsu made it in 1969 inside Japan's pink film industry, but it is plainly a political work: violence here is not there to titillate but to show how power gets assembled. Sixty six minutes designed to make the viewer uncomfortable, and open about wanting to.
