Late 1930s Japan. Lieutenant Kurokawa comes home from the war in China with no arms and no legs, half his face burned away, unable to hear or speak. There are medals on his chest and the state has declared him a god of war. His wife's assigned task is to feed this body, clean it and give it whatever it wants, and the village expects her to do it proudly. Kōji Wakamatsu drew on a story by Edogawa Ranpo that was banned in 1929. The film sets the language of heroism directly against what is happening inside one house, and it does not leave what the man did at the front outside the frame. Shinobu Terajima won the Silver Bear for best actress at Berlin in 2010 for this.
