What Shakedown Is About

Jack Early is a photographer who will do anything to get to the top. Sheer persistence gets him onto a major newspaper, and he makes his name soon enough by charming a well known crime boss, Nick Palmer, into being photographed. Palmer takes him under his wing, and Early chooses to bite the hand, setting Palmer against another boss, Colton. Joseph Pevney's film is noir set in San Francisco, and at its centre is not a criminal but a newspaperman living off crime. The camera is handled here like a weapon, and what decides where anyone stands is the framing itself.
