What Man of a Thousand Faces Is About
Lon Chaney grew up the child of deaf parents and learned to make himself understood with his face and his hands. He started in vaudeville and moved into film. His ability to remake his own face made him one of the best-known actors of the silent era almost at once; The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Phantom of the Opera exist because of his makeup. His private life was a disaster: his first wife's attempt on her own life, years apart from his son, and an inability to open up to anyone. Joseph Pevney directs, with James Cagney as Chaney. Two hours and two minutes. Chaney's son was among the film's advisers. The makeup scenes were shot using the real methods, and the film shows how Chaney actually worked.
