What The Midnight Story Is About
Father Thomasino, a much loved priest, is murdered in a San Francisco alley and the police have almost nothing to go on. Joe Martini, a traffic cop, takes it personally, and his suspicion settles on Sylvio Malatesta. Told to stay off the case, he hands in his badge and investigates on his own. He works his way into the Malatesta family, eats at their table, falls for their cousin Anna, and finds them all thoroughly decent people. He also becomes less and less certain that Sylvio did it. Joseph Pevney's 1957 film is less a police story than a question about loyalty: whether the man will side with his own suspicion or with what he has come to belong to. Tony Curtis and Gilbert Roland face each other across it.
