What Tammy and the Bachelor Is About
Tammy, a young woman raised in the Mississippi swamps, unschooled but not simple and living entirely by her own lights, rescues a man after an accident. Once he has recovered he invites her to his family's southern estate. There Tammy's world collides with the rules of that house, and she does not give up being herself. Directed by Joseph Pevney, the film has Debbie Reynolds as Tammy and Leslie Nielsen as the man. The song Tammy, sung by Reynolds, spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard chart and became the best-selling single by a woman in 1957; it was nominated for the Oscar for best original song. The unexpected success of the film brought two sequels and a television series after it.
