What Torpedo Run Is About
Barney Doyle commands an American submarine. In the Pacific he is hunting a Japanese carrier that led the attack on Pearl Harbor. But as he closes on the target a problem appears: in front of the enemy ship is a transport being used as a shield, and among the civilian prisoners aboard it are Doyle's wife and daughter. Joseph Pevney's film sets that impossible decision inside a war adventure. Glenn Ford plays the commander and Ernest Borgnine his second and closest friend. The film was nominated for an Oscar for its visual effects. The submarine scenes are cramped and airless; the telling puts the weight of the order given ahead of any victory.
