Sharmaji Namkeen

Hitesh Bhatia's 2022 Indian film follows Brij Gopal Sharma, newly retired from an appliance company in Delhi. His wife died years ago, he lives with his two sons, and he does not know how to fill the empty days. He likes to cook, and that interest leads him to unexpected work. The subject is less retirement than the fear of becoming invisible. Sharma's surroundings no longer assign him a task and he has to invent one; his family's discomfort with this is the real tension. Rishi Kapoor died during filming and Paresh Rawal completed the role. The film shows both men as the same character and does not disguise the choice. The result is formally unusual but emotionally plain as a farewell. Who it's for: those who like quiet Indian character comedy and want to see Rishi Kapoor's final work. Who it's not for: viewers expecting consistency of casting; the lead changes mid-film.
