What She Was Like a Wild Chrysanthemum Is About
Seventy three year old Masao sits in a boat going up the river towards the village where he grew up and watches the bank; when he sees a field of chrysanthemums, Tamiko comes into his mind. The two had loved each other as children, but neither their families nor the village would have it and they were separated. Masao was sent away to study; Tamiko was married off against her wishes and died young. He only learned of it afterwards and never married. Keisuke Kinoshita’s ninety three minute Japanese film was adapted from a novel by Sachio Itō and gives its flashbacks inside an oval frame. Chishū Ryū is in the cast; it was completed in 1955.
