What Here's to the Young Lady Is About
A matchmaker sets about joining the daughter of a wealthy Tokyo family with the modest owner of an auto garage. Both sides keep their distance from the idea at first. The man feels himself lacking in everything from table manners to taste in music. The young woman, for her part, knows her family is no longer what it was. The film gives the difference of class through comic situations without belittling anyone. Which family had fallen how far in post war Japan lies under the account. Whether two people can accept each other as they are is the real question. Shūji Sano and Setsuko Hara appear in Keisuke Kinoshita’s ninety minute Japanese film, completed in 1949.
