What The River Fuefuki Is About
In feudal Japan, in a time when civil wars are tearing through the fields, the eldest son of a very poor peasant family living beside the bridge over the river Fuefuki enters the service of a warlord to escape his misery, and his brothers soon follow him. Though not all the men of the family take that path of death, the women are left to carry the pain of loss across five generations. The film tells the war not through great scenes but through the house left behind. The account gives the generations one after another and makes repetition its true subject. Hand colouring is used in places in the image. Hideko Takamine appears in Keisuke Kinoshita’s hundred and seventeen minute Japanese film, completed in 1960.
