What Immortal Love Is About
A young woman is forced by circumstance into a loveless marriage while she is in love with someone else; the record’s own keywords say what that forcing was, since a rape stands at the beginning of the marriage. Keisuke Kinoshita then tells the nearly thirty years that follow in episodes: two people punishing each other across decades, and the enmity drawing in their children and everyone around them. Behind it stand the relation between landowner and tenant farmers and the postwar land reform, so the matter is not only between two people. Hideko Takamine plays the woman, Tatsuya Nakadai the husband and Keiji Sada the man she loves. The Shochiku production was submitted as Japan’s entry for the Academy Award and reached the shortlist. The record gives the running time as 103 minutes where sources say 107.
