What Sid & Judy Is About
The documentary tells the career and the life of Judy Garland through the material left behind by Sid Luft, her third husband. Little heard audio recordings, concert footage and family photographs are brought together; what the studio system did to a performer who was still a child, her power on stage and her exhaustion off it, and the comeback she made in the fifties are the headings of the account. The film presents her neither as a victim nor as a legend; her own voice and her husband’s account stand side by side and the two do not always agree. In Stephen Kijak’s hundred minute American documentary, Jennifer Jason Leigh reads Garland’s words and Jon Hamm reads Luft’s. It was completed in 2019.
