What The Rolling Stones: Stones in Exile Is About

In 1971, a rock band that has gone to France for room to breathe from tax and management troubles begins recording in the basement of a rented villa. The recording truck is parked in the garden and the band goes down for a few days at a time; upstairs is crowded without a break. The documentary gives that disorderly production in the words of the band members, of the musicians who worked with them and of someone who photographed those days. By September the villa is empty and the record is finished in another city. The album that came out was met coolly at first and later counted a masterpiece. What makes the documentary interesting is that it shows in how disorderly a set of conditions the story of a masterpiece came about. Stephen Kijak’s sixty one minute documentary was completed in 2010.
