What Sound! Euphonium the Movie - Our Promise: A Brand New Day Is About
Tatsuya Ishihara's 2019 anime is the feature continuation of the Sound! Euphonium series. Kumiko is now in her second year of high school and is given a new responsibility in the concert band: looking after the problems of the first years. One of the newcomers stops coming to rehearsal, and behind that lies a grievance carried over from middle school; in trying to resolve it, Kumiko has to weigh her own position as a senior for the first time. The film keeps the competition in the background and looks mainly at how difficult it is to hold authority inside a group. Kyoto Animation's music scenes are meticulous, with fingering, breathing and instrument detail drawn with care. Who it's for: people following the series and viewers who like school band stories. Who it's not for: anyone new to it; the film does not recount its characters' history.
