What Spirits in the Forest Is About
The film opens like a concert recording, but what it is really about is not what happens on stage. Depeche Mode's Global Spirit tour, running across 2017 and 2018, closed with more than a hundred and fifteen shows and over three million people; the final nights were filmed at the Waldbühne in Berlin. The camera sets the stories of six fans in among that concert: six people from Colombia, Mongolia, Romania, France and the United States. What the six describe is not the same thing: stories of loss, illness, loneliness and starting again. The only thing they share is the place this band's music holds in their lives. Anton Corbijn has built Depeche Mode's visual world for years, and here too he does not push the band forward. The film becomes a documentary about fan culture, about the people rather than the group.
