The gambler known only as Tennessee plays the high stakes tables, does well with women and has no friends at all. His one close tie in town is an uneasy one, with Duchess, who runs a bordello nobody bothers to disguise very hard. He is saved from being murdered by a quiet cowhand who introduces himself only as Cowpoke and who is in town to meet his fiancée Goldie off the steamboat. When Goldie arrives it becomes clear that something old sits between her and Tennessee, and the new friendship is tested badly. Allan Dwan's 1955 western sets John Payne against Ronald Reagan.
