What The Iron Mask Is About
Louis XIII of France is given a son, and then the queen delivers a twin. Cardinal Richelieu, seeing in the second boy the seed of a future war over the throne, has him taken secretly to Spain. Keeping the secret means shutting Constance, d'Artagnan's love, into a convent. When d'Artagnan gathers the musketeers to get her out, Richelieu outmanoeuvres them and has them banished. Allan Dwan's 1929 film continues the Three Musketeers Douglas Fairbanks made in 1921 and was his last silent, shot at the beginning of the sound era with a few spoken sequences. It is the last large-scale example of Fairbanks's acrobatic idea of action, taken from Alexandre Dumas's story of the man in the iron mask.
