What Manhandled Is About
Tessie McGuire works behind a counter in a department store; every morning she is crushed in a packed subway on the way to work, every evening she goes home and puts up with a boyfriend who pays her no attention. Invited to a society party, she does an impression of a Russian countess, and the impression gets her a job in the tea room of a smart dress shop. But the higher she climbs the more she has to fend off society gentlemen who treat her as something to play with, and she loses her old friends along the way. The title means both the shoving on the subway and the way the men handle her. Gloria Swanson plays the lead in Allan Dwan’s sixty three minute silent film, completed in 1924.
