Dimos Starenios What Thanos and Despina Is About
Katina, a poor woman, wants to marry her son Thanos, a shepherd who came home after failing to find work in Germany, to Despina, the daughter of the landowner they work for. Despina’s father Vlahopoulos will not agree; he has a wealthier man, Yankos, in mind for her. While Yankos works to break the two of them apart, Thanos and Despina try to run away and build a life of their own. In the dress of a love story the film is a hard political allegory about class, and its Greek title simply means The Shepherds. Nikos Papatakis finished the shoot in secret after the coup of 1967; it was shown in France in 1968, and Greek audiences could not see it until 1974. Olga Karlatos appears in the hundred and twenty minute production, completed in 1967.
