What The Fighting 69th Is About
The First World War. New York's famous 69th Regiment is shipped to France. Jerry Plunkett has just joined it: a loud, quarrelsome soldier who gets on with nobody and is soon in everyone's bad books. Father Duffy, the regimental chaplain, does not give up on him. At the front things will change. William Keighley's Warner picture takes a real regiment and a real man, Father Francis Duffy, as its subject. James Cagney plays Plunkett and Pat O'Brien the chaplain. The film was made in 1940, while America was still out of the war, and openly carries the purpose of raising morale. The telling does not treat fear as a disgrace, but in the end it still puts heroism first.
