What The Game of Love Is About
Two young people who have been friends since infancy reach adolescence and notice that the platonic bond between them has turned into something else, without knowing what to do about it. The arrival of an older woman complicates it further. Claude Autant-Lara adapted Colette’s 1923 novel and drew enormous hostility for touching adolescent sexuality: both the director and Edwige Feuillere, his leading actress, received threatening letters before the film was even finished. It won the biggest French film prize of the year all the same.
